These pieces of art are created in the ecological region- the Carpathian Mountains. The people that inhabit this territory are called hutsuls. This very blanket is called “lizhnyk”, probably after a word ”lay”, as here it was used instead of sheet, as to lay on it was both very warm and healthy.
Lizhnyk is the warmest shaggy blankets you will find anywhere!
It is difficult to imagine the Hutsul life without a lizhnyk. It can be used as a luxurious cover on the bed, a carpet on the wall or on the floor, but covered by the blanket slip it will be a light and warm blanket. It also makes a great sofa and chair cover or leg warmer.
Its value lies not only in its original appearance, but also in healing properties and a special power which it possesses. Lizhnyk is an eco-friendly product that is made by hutsul masters from natural sheep’s wool without the addition of synthetic or artificial colors. Best of all it manifests itself in the treatment of colds and diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
Natural sheep’s wool has great therapeutic potential and it is especially beneficial for children and elderly people.
Few of tourists couldn’t refrain to buy this soft marvel for themselves or as a present for friends. It is not only its beauty, but it also improves the micro climate in the urban apartments and even maintains the indoor temperature.
How our blankets are made:
To make the lizhnyk a craftsman uses wool from sheep that were raised in the high Carpathian mountain pastures, and natural dyes. Firstly, wool is washed and dried, combed by the special comb, and as a result a fluffy ball like a cloud is formed. By the way, blankets and pillows, filled with combed wool, promote healthy sleep.
The combed wool are easily twisted into threads, and lizhnyks are made out of them, mainly on the homemade looms.
The newly-woven lizhnyk is plunged into the special machine – valylo, the big wooden tub, narrowed down, along which water is channeled into a structure known as a “zholob”. Water flow smashes and sharply arises up by making a whirl where lizhnyks are churned for several hours so to say is felted. While being in the valylo, lizhnyks become tough and fluffy.
How to care:
Since this is a natural 100% wool. Only dry cleaning is allowed.
To add a fluffier look you can brush it.
